Let’s not forget that we are almost nearing 2023. Perhaps he knows the fandom of these movies will continue to live on. Shetty has delivered some comical hits in the past, like Golmaal and its sequels, references of which are stuffed through the film, which was indeed a smart move. The costume designers have brought back the ’60s fashion - a western touch for Jacqueline with her colourful maxi skater dresses and a more traditional vibe for Hegde with her bright floral sarees and hair puffs - this is the one thing that feels right.

Since the story is set in the ’60s, the makers have also recreated the retro vibe which runs across the movie as seen through the vintage cars, the township with cable trains, and the characters’ costumes. It’s good to have a bright colour palette for a movie like this but the makers have gone a notch higher and added extremely eye-popping candy colours that add to the headache. The same effect can be felt through the remaining sets of the film. With a story set in Ooty, the film features the hill station’s lavish green tea estates but with added filters which robs it of its natural beauty. Shetty has clearly tried too hard with this film but the other moments that desperation screams in your face is with the backdrops and aesthetics. Even though Varun Sharma has a double role there is not much difference in the two Joys he plays. Mishra, Jadhav, Mukesh Tiwari, Vrajesh Hirjee and Ashwini Kalsekar (who could have gotten more screen time) must get a special mention because it is when they come on-screen that the film manages to get a few laughs out of you. In fact, one can say that the supporting cast of the film has really shouldered the movie’s weight. It helps that seasoned comical actors like Sanjay Mishra, Johnny Lever and Siddhartha Jadhav are delivering the lines because they make it tolerable.

He seems to lack that same energy and motivation in the rest of the film, something which was perhaps the case with the writers as well. That is the only time in the movie when he gives an electrifying performance. Perhaps the only time he does give off the Ranveer Singh vibe is when he dances alongside Deepika Padukone in the latter’s special appearance in the song ‘ Current Laga Re‘. Singh has proven his mantle and versatility as an actor right from his collaborations with Sanjay Leela Bhansali where he was seen in more demanding roles to his debut in Shetty’s cop universe with Simmba and Sooryavanshi (even his cameo of a few minutes in the latter was way more entertaining and memorable than his double role in Cirkus) but here the actor offers just as much as the underwritten characters of Jacqueline Fernandez and Pooja Hegde - which is not a lot.

One might argue that Singh has the most electrifying energy on and off screen but the actor fails to breathe that life into the film. If you get past this then don’t get too excited because the cringefest has only just begun. In doing so, anybody who comes in contact with the second Roy also gets electrified and the two break into a dance to the tunes of the ’70s. Meanwhile, each time he does this famous ‘final act’ where he holds two extremely high voltage cable wires together, the second Roy gets the electric shock and survives it (you’re not supposed to use your brain, remember?). Singh is seen in a double role as Roy where one character is immune to getting electric shocks and uses that to continue the circus his father left behind after he was killed in an accident. In moments where the movie forgets to evoke humour, it tries to send a social message and fails at both. That this “experiment” is conducted in a blatantly unethical manner is the least of the problems in Cirkus. The story follows two set of two twins, Roy (Ranveer Singh) and Joy (Varun Sharma), who get exchanged intentionally by a doctor (Murali Sharma) for his selfish motives but for reasons which aim at the greater good of the society. The filmmaker’s latest is based on Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors but with Cirkus, much like the spelling, he gets everything else in the film wrong too. Yet, no matter how hard you try not to question the science behind what is happening on the screen, you can’t help but think of all the things you could have done in those 138 minutes instead of watching this film. Cars, action, and the Rohit Shetty veteran cast that comprises recurring and highly talented comic actors. Two blockbuster franchises and multiple hit movies later, the audience knows what to expect from a Rohit Shetty film.
